How to: Fight Climate Change at Work - Signet Resources

News from Signet - 24th April 2013

In celebration of Earth Day earlier this week, we have put together some manageable and useful tips to help combat global warming at work.

It’s easy to disregard environmental issues whilst we don’t feel directly affected by them in our day-to-day lives. However, the impact of climate change will eventually have a devastating effect on both our planet and the life on it.

From air quality to health issues, living conditions to the Earth’s wildlife – global warming will have detrimental consequences for future generations.  By just making a few small changes in our everyday routines, we can do our bit to save our home.

Clever Commute:

  • If you can, take public transport –you won’t need to worry about petrol prices or finding the best parking spot!
  • Walk/Bike/Run – get your daily dose of exercise from your commute.
  • If you have to drive, drive efficiently – Make sure your car is running on top form, small things like making sure your tyres are properly inflated (which can increase mileage by a 3%!) can make a big difference

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle:

  • Reduce: always look for products that use minimal packaging.
  • Reuse: try to use reusable items rather than disposable.
  • Recycle: keep an eye on any materials that can be recycled instead of thrown away – paper, plastic, cans, even office equipment like laptops and printer cartridges.
  • Do you have a recycling scheme at work? If not, why not look into implementing one.

Switch Sense:

  • Leaving lights on, unused chargers plugged in and appliances on standby all create wasted electricity, which of course means wasted money.
  • We build up a staggering £740 million of wasted energy every year from not flipping the switch off.

Thoughtful Tea Time:

  • A cup of tea or coffee at work is a necessity for most of us; as a nation on average we drink 1 billion cups a week!
  • 2/3 of people boil twice as much water than needed when making tea – not only a waste of water but of energy too. Again this means higher costs on your utility bill, as well as higher CO₂ emissions.
  • Ask your company to invest in an eco-kettle which boils the right amount of water of each cup.
