First up, apologies for using the C word.
But this weekend, I found myself doing the usual supermarket shop and suddenly found myself in an aisle full of crackers, sweet tins and gift ideas for the festive season.
My heart sunk as I realised it was only September, but it would merely be a matter of weeks before the carols would be belting out in the streets as the retail world pushes the message that Christmas is indeed on its way.
I like to bury my head in the snow, and wait until December 14th to start planning anything Christmassy, but in the office, it is something that needs to be considered.
November is a big month for us when many businesses approach us to recruit for new HR personnel and when we ask the question…When do you want them to start?
The answer is inevitably – ideally before Christmas.
Realistically, that may not happen.
Recruitment is a process that requires time to get it right and to hire than right process. If you focus on speed over quality you may find yourself lonely at Christmas (sorry, again!), or hiring the wrong person.
When to start looking for that Christmas hire?
That is the short answer.
This week and next are perfect timing to start briefing your recruitment partner about your needs going into 2018, I would recommend arranging a briefing meeting, putting together a job description, and laying out a timeline in the first week of October if you want to have a successful recruitment process before Christmas.
If you brief and discuss your needs in the first week of October, your recruitment partner should then take a couple of weeks to search the market, conduct first stage competency interviews, and prepare a shortlist of candidates for you to interview in the third and fourth weeks of October.
Second interviews can then be conducted in the start of November, with ideally, an offer letter being sent no later than Bonfire Night.
A four-week notice period brings us nicely to the start of December and you can have your new hire firmly in place in time for the Christmas party. Training can be done during December and 2018 can be kicked off with a team ready to go.
Proving that in the recruitment world, it is really never too early to be thinking about Christmas…..
